  • What did we achieve in 2015?

This year has been really amazing at UK Trans Info, so we wanted to take a brief look back and share with you some of the highlights:

Confirmed Legal Right to Treatment within 18 Weeks in England

UK Trans Info had campaigned for many months to get NHS England to acknowledge that patients have the legal right to access gender identity services within 18 weeks of being referred by their GP, and then later to access surgery within 18 weeks of being referred by their GIC. There had been repeated claims from NHS organisations that gender identity services were exempt from this legislation, but our position had consistently been that these organisations are incorrect in their understanding of the legal position. We were therefore very pleased when in January NHS England finally confirmed that the 18 week Referral to Treatment standard for referrals fully applied to Gender Identity Services. While it will take time for them to achieve this, knowing that we have the legal right to treatment within this time severely increases the pressure on them to remedy the situation. We were featured in an article about this in Pink News.

Guide to Changing Your Name and Title

Due to the numerous misconceptions about what people have to do in order to change their name, which is not helped by the government's own site being misleading, in June we published a comprehensive guide to changing your name and title. This guide has already been downloaded over 4,000 times.

Web Hosting Service for Trans and Non-binary Organisations

UK Trans Info believe that all trans and non-binary groups, organisations and charities should be able to have a website, but we recognise that the costs involved can be prohibitive. For this reason in July we launched a new web hosting service specifically for trans and non-binary groups, organisations and charities. The service is either free or very low cost, depending on the organisation's circumstances and requirements.

20% of General Election Candidates Sign our Non-binary Pledge

In the run up to the General Election, UK Trans Info joined with several non-binary organisations to create the non-binary pledge. This asked General Election Candidates to support non-binary people by expanding the Equality Act, reviewing the Gender Recognition Act and changing passport requirements. In total we had over 800 candidates sign the pledge, which was over 20% of all candidates. Articles were run about the pledge in both Pink News and the Daily Mirror.

    Trans Equality Inquiry

The launch of the Trans Equality Inquiry in July was a major opportunity for the issues facing trans and non-binary people to be recognised by the government. As such UK Trans Info made a detailed submission to the inquiry. We also launched the www.transinquiry.co.uk microsite, collating all relevant information about the inquiry in one place. The microsite has already been visited almost 3,000 times by over 1,600 individual users since it launched in September.

Guide to Legal Gender Recognition in the UK

In 2014 we saw the most significant changes to gender recognition in the UK since the Gender Recognition Act was enacted in 2004 due to the same-sex marriage legislation in England, Scotland and Wales. However this resulted in a complicated gender recognition process that varied depending on where you live, whether you are married or in a civil partnership, and where you entered into that marriage or civil partnership. In November we launched a new guide to gender recognition in the UK, which was produced with support and funding from the Scottish Transgender Alliance. The booklet explains what gender recognition is, what the eligibility requirements are, how to make the application and what happens once you have applied. It also guides you through the additional steps you’ll need to take if you are married or in a civil partnership. In the three weeks since the guide was launched it has already been downloaded over 2,200 times.

Promoting Transparency and Accountability in the NHS

For years the NHS has been quite secretive about the details on how it runs Gender Identity Services. By building links with the various organisations involved, and through the strategic use of the Freedom of Information Act, UK Trans Info has been able to shed light on things. We have promoted transparency and accountability in several ways:

Sharing the Latest Information Affecting Trans and Non-binary People in the UK

This year UK Trans Info has shared almost 450 important pieces of news, information and resources from around the UK. We share these through Facebook, Twitter, Ello and Tumblr, as well as through our weekly newsletter. We have developed an impressive reach, with our Facebook posts being displayed over 419,000 times in total this year and our Twitter tweets being displayed over 888,000 times in total this year.
