Brief Summary

Guidance used by Exeter (The Laurels) Gender Identity Clinic when prescribing hormone therapy.

Extract from Document

This summary is written with a specific focus on how we might best recommend and support hormone therapy as a component of the treatment and care of transsexual patients. It is recognised that the field of knowledge is not well known to either endocrinologists or general psychiatrists either of whom may only see a few patients and rarely take on a primary therapeutic role. Historically care has depended on access to tertiary centres out with the region, while in recent years the clinic firstly in Newton Abbott then in Exeter has developed expertise and growing experience. This is in line with the pattern of services in the UK outlined by physicians who do have a strong background in the field: Wylie (1), in his outline of models of care provided regionally, at least for all but some specialised surgical interventions; reiterated succinctly by Levy (2).
